Welcome to Gaea Cypria!
I’m Mary Katsounotou, hailing from the beautiful island of Cyprus. My passion for food was ignited in my childhood, as I spent countless hours in the kitchen alongside my grandmother and mother, eager to learn and immerse myself in a culinary adventure.
I pursued my academic journey at the Cyprus University of Technology, specializing in Food Science within the Department of Agriculture, Biotechnology, and Food Science. My quest for knowledge then led me to Italy, where I earned a Master’s Degree in Food Gastronomy: World Food Cultures and Mobility from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo.
During my time in Italy, I had the privilege of connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds, exploring new places, and deepening my understanding of global culinary traditions. These experiences instilled in me a profound appreciation for my Greek-Cypriot heritage. My dissertation, conducted in collaboration with the Ark of Taste under the Slow Food movement, focused on preserving unique and at-risk traditional products, recipes, desserts, and beverages that are integral to the cultural and historical fabric of various regions.
Through this platform, I aim to share the rich tapestry of Greek-Cypriot culture and tradition, presenting insights gathered from personal interviews I carried out with local individuals and ongoing research. I hope to inspire you with the same excitement and passion that have fuelled my journey.
Join me as we explore and celebrate the culinary treasures of our heritage.
